SILENCE

A CONCERT BY LUCIE ANTUNES
CHOREOGRAPHED BY MATHILDE MONNIER

This project was born from an artistic encounter between Lucie Antunes and Mathilde Monnier. Both share the same fascination with rhythm and its transformative power: how sound sets the body in motion, how dance makes music resonate.

The relationship to music is the foundation of this creation, conceived first and foremost as a concert, where listening and gesture are built as mirror images of one another.

Lucie Antunes, a drummer and percussionist trained in classical and contemporary music, composes here a new sonic work, in continuity with her exploration of trance and repetition. Her music, driven by obsessive rhythms and minimalist metric structures, follows in the lineage of Meredith Monk and the pioneers of minimalism.

Mathilde Monnier takes this musical material as the anchor point for the dance: bodies respond to rhythm as to a call. The choreography explores this intimate relationship between pulse and movement, in the manner of shamans for whom the beating of the drum opens pathways to other realms of perception. Rhythm acts here as a trigger for trance, a motor of the imagination.

Silence explores the relationship between sound and the body: sound is omnipresent, it passes through our bodies and makes life pulse through breath, heartbeats, voice, music, and the noises of the world.
Silence itself becomes a driving force and an accelerator of creation, both the point of departure and the point of arrival of a musical and choreographic experience. It is neither emptiness nor absence, but a pretext for the emergence of a richness of sounds and movements—a moment where music and dance converge.

Silence explores trance and altered states of consciousness, which transform the perception of time and space, oscillating between meditative slowness and rhythmic frenzy. The choreography draws inspiration from these variations, from movements that rise and fall, from pauses and sudden bursts, offering spectators a physical and sensory immersive experience.

The rhythmic work is based on precise structures: pulses, repetitions, and motifs inspired by nature—waves, tides, cycles—create a sonic and bodily backbone that supports the entire performance.
